The term “gems” can refer to different precious stones gathered into a necklace, serving as a metaphor for the selection of arias that will be performed. But if “gems” are understood as the buds of a plant, then the meaning becomes even more profound, for the root of these flowers is Claudio Monteverdi, the father of melodrama. Through the voice of Laurence Kilsby, beginning precisely with Monteverdi, the concert will explore other Italian composers, both well-known and lesser-known, before reaching the other great giant of the long musical era we identify as the Baroque: Georg Friedrich Händel, who, like Monteverdi, shares the unmistakable ability to paint vivid musical portraits of his characters.
